Welcome to The Queen's Games, a future/AU Tortallan based forum headed by a Matriarchal Monarchy in the Queendom of Kalim. Gaining independence little more than a century ago, the Queen has been pushing for contact with Tortall and other lands to the east in the past decade. With the victor of the Games to win the Crown Princess's hand decided, the Darshani Empire has set its eyes on conquering Kalim and regaining power through force.

The bears have finally gone into hibernation, which means that winter is finally here. As the month progresses, the weather drops drastically towards downright frigid, especially in the north. The south sees more sun than the rest of the country, but isn't forgiving with its temperatures. Kalim isn't quite seeing its coldest weather yet, but the wardrobes of those who can afford them have by now changed from light to much, much heavier clothing. It doesn't rain often, but when there is precipitation, sleet and even snow are more common.

A Sarainite and a Darshani walk into a bar... and Kadri proves his ability, yet again, to attract tavern fights. Not to mention get himself beaten up. Though court life may cause soldiers to get antsy, at least they can find solace in making trouble with each other. And beating up people with each other. And it's not like Arluin seems to mind that he got caught up in the middle of it...
Elaina of House Sunspear
A sharp, politically-minded young woman, Elaina of House Sunspear is the daughter of the leader of the Khirosian government-in-exile, and it shows. Not content to have things arranged around her, Elaina has made an active effort to forge political connections and gain friends (and unintentionally perhaps acquire enemies...) at court in order to further her cause. Don't let her Khirosian heritage fool you, however: despite Khiros's patriarchal nature, Elaina has made a constant effort to keep herself trained and for the day the Eversworn march on Khiros.
Diamond Lieson
Having survived the worst the River Cities has to offer with sharp blades and a sharper wit, Diamond has built his life on his reputation as a reliable, quality rook. His inability to speak has made him intensely expressive in his communication, but the spectacle he creates can be dropped in an instant when escape is imperative. While the world has taught him that keeping your distance from others means keeping your life, there is little he won’t do for those he allows a place in his heart.

Atlas
The Mountebank Named after the Rook slang for a profession that involves standing in a high spot in a public area and yelling the news (very, very loudly), this forum includes IC "public information" that may or may not be true, but is often widespread. Ranging from rumors of war to gossip about the Queen's latest fashion choice, no piece of information is too large or small to be warped in the entity that is gossip.

Royal Palace Located within the inner ring of protective walls that were constructed around Richilde following the Independence War, the royal palace is an architectural marvel. It is a huge complex of limestone buildings, scattered with gardens and pristine courtyards, it features intricately detailed stonework.
The City Kalim's bustling capital city never seems to sleep (though contrary to popular belief it does). Featuring a huge temple complex close to the gates of the inner walls, the city is surrounded by a thick protective wall built after the Independence War. Subforums: Market
Lake Richilde Considered the heart of the queendom, this huge lake is located at the dead center of the country. The waters are outrageously deep, and the lake doubles as a sort of inland harbour since the Yesan River is wide and deep enough to allow full-sized ships passage.
Convent School Located outside the city walls but within view of the city, the convent is the place where the queendom's young ladies learn all the things they need to know to head a household. The convent also trains those with the Gift, but the education in magic is not as intensive as what is offered at the Academy in Havran.
Old Palace The home of the Kalimi Royal Family before the Darshan Empire invaded, the Old Palace is now the home of Havran's noble family. It's splendor has faded somewhat over the years, but it still retains much of its former glory.
The City Havran is one of the queendom's oldest cities, and it is a popular place for families to settle. Though it is known as the home of the Queen's Games, Havran has much more to offer. Subforums: The Winder's Way Inn
The Academy Created specifically to train the population's Gifted, the Academy offers the queendom's highest level of education (except, perhaps, for what the royalty receives). Unfortunately tuition is quite steep, but there are programs in place to help highly Gifted commoners attend.
Grennae Mountains Forming a natural barrier between Kalim and the Darshan Empire on two sides of the queendom are the Grennae Mountains. Heavily forested and littered with caves that are rumoured to create an underground network, the mountains play host to the bears that are sacred to the goddess Akalimi. For those who believe in the existence of the Petran Faction, the mountains are also supposed to be the location for their headquarters.

Emerald Ocean The vast expanse of turbulent water off Kalim's eastern coast is known as the Emerald Ocean. The southern coast has strong currents and experiences frequent storms, but it's calmer to the north near Eldeva. The Yamani Islands are a one-week journey by ship, and the Copper Isles can be reached in just over that.

Yesan River Running from Eldeva Harbour to Lake Richilde, the Yesan River is both wide and deep enough to allow even the largest ships to sail along it. The Yesan River is the main route of passage from the coast to the capital.

Richilde River Running south past Havran from the Richilde River Complex, the Richilde River flows across the Kalimi-Darshani border. Once it crosses into the Darshan Empire, it acquires a different name.
Borders By land the Queendom of Kalim is completely surrounded by the Darshan Empire. The Grennae Mountains form a natural barrier for most of the border, but the southern end of the nation is heavily guarded in case of Darshani invasion. Subforums: Darshani Raid

Richilde River Complex The mess of skinny rivers flowing south from Lake Richilde has come to be known as the Richilde River Complex. The rivers join up to form the Richilde River just north of Havran.

The Cities Not quite "cities", the River Cities are a massive number of towns clustered along the Richilde River Complex. They boast the highest crime rate in the queendom, and are the home of Kalim's black market. If you start a thread in here, please note the city in which it takes place as well as the date.
Market Located in Alora, one of the larger towns that make up the River Cities, the market is more on the black side of things. Nobles have been known to buy back goods that have been stolen from them here, and there are always rumours of Darshanis buying and selling as well.
The Past Sometimes things have happened in the past that were really important to the character, or that you just plain old want to thread out. This is the place to do all of that lovely stuff.
Other Countries The Queendom of Kalim is the main setting for threads, but obviously important events happen elsewhere as well. Threads that take place in other countries should go here, and please make a note of what country it takes place in!
Festival of the Hunt In celebration of the divine huntress Akalimi, the Festival of the Hunt takes place on the 25th and 26th of November. Contests are held all over the country as to who can bring in the most and the largest game as a last hurrah before true winter sets in.
All Souls' Eve The Dark God's holiday is a more somber even than many of Kalim's festivals. Held in honor of the departed, it is a day of rest, storytelling, and songs, celebrating the lives and acts of those lost.
